Chapter Eleven

By two o’clock Sunday afternoon when Callie arrived at the cottage, she’d decided to adhere to Trace’s request to keep things purely business.

There had been some awkwardness at church that morning. Several friends had joined her and been introduced to Trace. Afterward, he’d said nothing about lunch together, so they’d parted ways.

Again she berated herself for the stupid mistake of Friday night.

She wasn’t certain in her own mind if she was attracted to Trace or to the illusion that Tommy once offered. Was she looking for some kind of relationship that would give her everything she expected and not be one full of pitfalls and reality?

“Show me where you would have me go, Lord. Let me be content with all I now have.” she murmured as she made her way up the short walkway to the cottage door.

Was she ready to trust another man with her heart? She didn’t think so. Margo was the one always surging ahead, certain the current man she was dating was Mr. Right. Callie was more conservative.

And after Tommy’s actions, doubly wary of trusting.

She was determined to finish the work this afternoon and be out of Trace’s way.

Trace met her at the door.

Callie greeted him calmly, belying the rapid increase in her heart rate. Without looking directly at him, she went straight to the studio. It was the same as they’d left it a few days ago.

“We’ll do it that same way as before?” he asked, picking up the clipboard.

“Sure.”

She picked up the first picture, wishing she could rush through the job and get out. But she owed it to Tommy and her own sense of artistic integrity to do the best job she could.

Jotting a number on the back, she studied the scene for a moment then began her assessment.

It grew easier as they progressed. There wasn’t much difference in either the style, execution or composition of the paintings. It was as if Tommy found one scene he liked and replicated it whenever he felt like painting. She couldn’t even tell how recently he painted the scenes.

The afternoon was growing late by the time the last canvas was valued. Callie set it back against the stack she’d been working on and looked at Trace.

“It’ll take me a few days to get everything put into a format you can use for tax purposes. This is my professional opinion of the paintings worth. You may receive more or less upon sale.”

“Understood,” Trace said.

“You may wish to ask another appraiser for his or her valuation.”

“I trust you.”

In this, at any rate.

“Well, good. But another opinion might be needed for tax purposes since there is no track record from sales. If you have two or three independent appraisers giving you the same valuation, it will carry more weight with the IRS.”

She held out her hand for the stack of notes on the clipboard.

“I can recommend some other appraisers if you like,” she said.

Trace handed her the chipboard and moved to stand near the window, gazing out to the sea.
